Violet Hour is from a series of video landscapes where I removed or manipulated key spatial makers so that a known space becomes foreign. For Violet Hour, I shot footage of the San Francisco Bay then removed the shoreline and sky. What remains is water and disembodied wake patterns that appear on its surface. In the last few seconds the shoreline fades back into view in a final “corrected” image. This final image is in actuality a composite of different sections of the bay (the landscape is of the west towards the Golden Gate Bridge and the water is from the east towards Oakland). This presents a false realism and is a commentary on imaging and representation and the viewer’s relationship to spatial signifiers.
