Largely recorded in the Concord River Valley of New England, much of my current body of work deals with the interactions and observation of nature and self. The Transcendentalists such as Ralph Waldo Emerson lived and formulated their ideology in this precise geographic area. Very much like my videos, they insisted the only way to observe and interact with nature was through art, poetry and emotions.
They are poetic video vignettes, a form of optical magic, walking in search of the unity within and between humans and our environment. Using my camera and technical special effects I showcase nature unembarrassed by lyricism. The Transcendentalists were directly influenced by the visionary German naturalist and polymath, Alexander von Humboldt. I use technology in the same way he used his scientific instruments and observations to get his ideas about nature across.
Nature, he wrote, was in mysterious communication with our ‘inner feelings’. There is a correlation between the external world and our internal moods.
Von Humboldt interacted scientifically with nature on personal and universal levels to truly understand it’s importance and impact on our natural world. Nature can only be understood by turning inwards. Imagination is necessary as a rational thought in order to understand nature. Sepuash is the word for river in the local Native American Indian tribe of the Wampanoag.
