POINT OF LAND AND WATER
Length – 2:59
Description – 2017 single channel video: Shot on the Concord River, MA and Niagara Falls, Canada. Audio - Charlie Nieland

In post reality the imagined aesthetic gives potency to the solitary walk through the woods. The leaves on the trees become the green water that transports the flotsam of life. The walker lives in the drifting foam with it’s undulating waves of light and shadows. Drifting becomes a meditation on nature. The medium becomes the message for the walker that is mediating the medium. An implosion, if you will, that expands everything. As you lose yourself in the attenuated nature you are never more alive.

A new reality emerges, born from the last.
The Transcendentalists were directly influenced by the visionary German naturalist and polymath, Alexander von Humboldt. I use technology in the same way he used his scientific instruments and observations to get his ideas about nature across.
Nature, he wrote, was in mysterious communication with our ‘inner feelings’. There is a correlation between the external world and our internal moods.
Von Humboldt interacted scientifically with nature on personal and universal levels to truly understand it’s importance and impact on our natural world. Nature can only be understood by turning inwards. Imagination is necessary as a rational thought in order to understand nature.
